Michigan rose or the Prairie flowers from June to July. It is also known as Climbing. Many double flowering roses like the Gem of the Prairies and the Queen have been derived from it. The flower grows well in rich prairie soil and the thickets. It produces bright pink colored flowers which later fade away to white. These unscented flowers are about two and a half inches in width. The styles of the flowers come together to form smooth columns on which bees are attracted to perch. Seed vessel and a round hip are also formed by the glandular fruiting calyx. The stout stem can be several feet in length. Prickles that are widely separated are present on the stem. Leaves are made up of three or five oval leaflets. They can either be obtuse or acute at the tip. Calyx and stalks are usually glandular. These flowers are found all over from southern Ontario and Wisconsin to the Gulf and till Florida in the east. Scientifically it's known as Rosa setigera.
Meadow rose or the Smooth blooms from June to July. It does well in rocky and moist places. It is also known as Early. It produces big, fragrant pink colored flowers which later turn white. This leafy bush can be up to three feet in length. It can have few prickles though it's usually unarmed. Unlike the climbing rose the styles do not project nor come together in a column. Leaves are made of five to seven green, blunt and oval leaflets. It has broad stipules. Its botanical name is Rosa blanda. The Swamp rose or Rosa Carolina from May to midsummer. It grows well in low wet ground and swamps. This bush can either be a foot in length or be as tall as a man. It has hooked, stout prickles but no bristles. The leaflets usually seven in number are hairy from below so that the pores are not filled with moisture. It produces clustered pink colored flowers. The cup enlarges in fruit and forms a glandular, round and hairy red hip. Calyx lobes are sharp and long which drop off before the cup enlarges. It is found from Quebec to Florida and in Mississippi in the west. Pasture rose or Rosa humilis blossoms from May to July. It grows well in rocky, light or dry soil. It can also blossom in autumn like the other roses. It is found in abundance from Ontario to Georgia and till Wisconsin in the west. It is a very common wild rose. Wild Brier or Canker Bloom flowers from June to July. It is also known as Dog Rose. It grows along the banks and roadsides. It produces white or pink colored roses. It resembles sweetbrier but lacks its fragrance. Due to this the prefix "dog" has been added to its name. Scientifically it's known as Rosa canina. It has irregular and long braches. The plant covers the land with its beautiful and smooth foliage. Rose hedges were earlier used to surround the garden. The roses used were Red Rose or Rosa Gallica. This hundred leaved flower was chosen by the Indo-Germanic stock. This plant played a significant part amongst the ancient Germans. Yellow rose or Rosa lutea was used by the Turks and the Mongolians. The Musk Rose or Rosa moschata and The Damascus Rose or Rosa Damascena was appreciated by the Arabs and the Semitics. The Damascus Rose flowers two times a year. Eastern Asia which includes Japan and China is the homeland of Tea and Indian Roses. Swwetbriar or Rosa rubIginosa has russet glands on the undersides of leaflets. This is a characteristic feature of this plant. The glands emit an aromatic odor. This scrumptious plant is found naturally in Tennessee and from east of Canada to Virginia. Cherokee rose originated from China. Scientifically it's named Rosa Sinica. This beautiful white rose has an American Indian name. It is found in the south where it climbs and rambles with luxuriance. Its evergreen leaves are lustrous and dark.
