Many people do not realize that certain flowers mean certain things.  It’s easy to pick out the prettiest bunch or to instruct the person over the phone what to send; however, it’s especially meaningful to the recipient to send flowers that are known to have special meaning.  For example, everyone knows roses are a symbol of love but different colors and different stages of bloom mean different things. While a red rose means “I love you,” a white rose means “eternal love.”  One single white rose from a man to a woman or vice versa and we’re talking serious love!  Baby’s breath, which is a staple in many bouquets, also means everlasting love.  Sometimes people look for a hidden meaning when you send flowers.  By knowing ahead of time what the meanings are it can be especially fun for both parties.

It may be in your best interests to learn the language of flowers before you say something you don’t mean!  Yellow roses stand for friendship while the right shade of pink means “Thank you.”  Send flowers for either occasion when you mean it but if you send yellow roses to your girlfriend you might be in trouble. Most florists have a card that lists what the major kinds of flowers mean and you can find an exhaustive list online.  Of course, if you’re the only one that realizes the meaning, whether you’re the giver or the recipient, it won’t mean much.  When you send flowers and you really want the recipient to know the meaning behind them, instruct the florist to tuck one of those cards in with the bouquet prior to delivery.

Do not hesitate to send flowers for any occasion.  You can say anything with flowers.  Need to apologize?  Purple hyacinth says “I’m sorry.”  You’ll probably still have to get the words out but in the meantime, flowers, no matter what the occasion, can be a great ice-breaker.
