Sunflowers are also popular among many gardeners. They are very easy to grow and the best thing is they are the most inexpensive of all annuals. As the name indicates, sunflowers need adequate sunlight to grow fully. In fact they turn their faces to the direction of the sun. Sunflowers are planted after frost. If you are using seeds then water them regularly and keep the beds fairly moist until they start sprouting. Just like other flowers, these flowers also come in different types depending on how they are bred. These types are teddy bear, Italian wine, autumn mix, and some others. There are large sunflower varieties as well. Sunflower plant grows to a height of almost 10-20 feet. Make sure that you are providing enough room for their growth.

Rudbeckias are a class of annuals not known to many. They are often called by the names of black-eyed Susans and yellow coneflowers. They are very easy to grow and are extremely reliable even in unfavorable conditions. They give a bright yellow glow and look beautiful in any garden. You will find many varieties of rudbeckias. Some of the names are fulgida, maxima, triloba, and hirta. Maxima is the tallest of all and grows to a height of around 7 to 8 feet. Hirta is the one known as black-eyed Susan and is very common. Indian summer is a kind of hirta rudbeckias and you must have heard about its beautiful golden petals. All these varieties best grow in hot climates and require full sun. In rainy seasons the flowers start to wither.

Marigold is another type of annual that is easy to grow and maintain. They grow in bright colors from spring to frost. The basic growing tips are the same as for any other annual. Fertilize your marigolds every four to six weeks. There are many varieties of marigolds – French singles and giant pompoms are two of the most popular. Some marigold varieties are multicolored and they look beautiful in a garden. Single colored marigolds are found in white, yellow, orange and red colors. They are grown from seeds and require adequate sunlight. Marigolds have the ability to grow even if they are unattended for long periods of time. They produce a slightly pungent odor and therefore insects don’t come near them. That is why marigolds are easier to grow than any other annual and will survive many unfavorable conditions.

Sweet Peas are extremely fragrant annuals, very easy to grow and look beautiful in a garden. You would want to grow them adjacent to a wall where they can be tied to form a wall of their own. They are found in all exquisite colors like red, blue, lavender and white and will accentuate the beauty of any garden in which they are grown. They grow from late spring to summer. The popular varieties are Spencer cultivars, old-fashioned sweet peas and Bijou group.
