Posted by: mom blog Calopogon is a lovely orchid which is considered by some to be the most attractive flower of the Orchid family. It is also known as Grass Pink. Scientifically it's named as Limodorum tuberosum. It flowers from June to July. It thrives well in low meadows, swamps and cranberry bogs. It is found from Florida to the Mississippi. The plant produces purplish pink colored flowers which can be 3 to 15 in number. The flowers can be up to one inch in length and are produced on the spikes. The plant looks like it is growing in a reverse fashion; this is due to presence of a crested lip in the plant which is present on the upper portion of the flower. This is a bulb plant and its leaves are long grass like. Wild flowers like the rose pogonia are usually outnumbered by it due to its excellent growth. Thick magenta, white and yellow colored hairs are found on the plant and that's why it is called Calopogon which means "beautiful beard".
Pale Corydalis or Pink is a member of the Poppy family. Its botanical name is Capnoides sempervirens. It flowers from April to September. The flower grows well in rich, cool and rocky woods. It is found in North Carolina, Alaska and Minnesota in the south. It is known for its yellow tipped pink colored flowers which are half an inch in length. Its smooth, branched and curved stem can grow up to two feet in length. The plant also has narrow seed pod which is about two inches in length. The leaves of the plant are delicate and grayish green in color. The flowers of this plant hang in a reversed fashion on the stem. The flower thus looks like squirrel corn, Dutchman's breeches, climbing fumitory and bleeding heart which is its kin. Dianthus Armeria or The Deptford Pink is a wild flower that flowers from June to September. The plant grows on roadsides or in the fields. It is found in New England, Southern Ontario. It is also seen till Maryland in the south and Michigan in the west. The plant can be 6 to 18 inches in length and it grows in an erect and stiff manner. It is known for producing small pink colored flowers in clusters. The flowers have white dots on them. The plant's stem is covered with fine hairs and it rarely branches out. Its leaves are shaped like a blade, though some lower leaves are round in shape. This flower belongs to the Pink family. The true pink flowers of Europe are the Bunch Pink or Sweet William and the Clove Pink. Bunch pink is also known as Dianthus barbatus. These flowers were once considered sacred in reference to Jupiter and hence were called Dianthus meaning Jove's own flower. They are the antecedent of the present world Carnations. Another pink flower is the Deptford pink which has no fragrance. However butterflies are attracted to them in the autumn when they appear as bright patches in the parched grass. These small creatures are the faithful admirers of this pink flower!
